This Week in Geek (26/04-2/05/10)

Buys

Amazon was having a sale, and I'd been frowning at the over-priced MI5 (Spooks) Series 6 box for a while (why does it cost more than the others??) so I snatched it up.

"Accomplishments"

DVDs: Flipped Magnum Force, the second movie in my Dirty Harry collection. It provides an interesting flip side to the original film, with Harry going up against vigilantes who have gone too far and clarifying his own morality in the process. The DVD includes a period featurette and a feature on the ethics of the Dirty Harry films, all good, but you can skip the commentary track by scriptwriter John Milius. He doesn't bring a lot to the table, except maybe criticizing Clint Eastwood for being cheap or encouraging you to commit your own acts of vigilantism against white collar criminals (in between the lulls, that is).

After a few Kung Fu Fridays with heavier films, we were happy to put Jackie Chan's New Police in the DVD player, but oops! It's not a comedy! The original Police Story movies had more of an edge to them than most of his work, but NPS really goes over the edge. It's really very dark, and the villains can't possibly get their proper dues in a Jackie Chan film at the end. Which isn't to say it wasn't good. The crimes were imaginative, the stuntwork excellent, and the drama quite effective. One of his better films. The DVD provides a featurette and really brief commentary on two selected stunt scenes, but I do like the bit with Jackie struggling through English dubbing.

New Unauthorized Doctor Who CCG cards: 4 from Mawdryn Undead, the next story to feature in Dreams of Gallifrey.

Hyperion to a Satyr entries this week include:
