Star Trek 1036: Kingdom of the Damned

1036. Kingdom of the Damned

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: The Next Generation #31, DC Comics, May 1992

CREATORS: Michael Jan Friedman (writer), Carlos Garzon and Pablo Marcos (artists)

STARDATE: 45482.9-45483.8 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: Riker is trapped in a phantom zone, on a station that has been sucked into a rift in space. Though ghostly phantoms tell him there's no escape, he doesn't give up hope. The Enterprise sends a probe into the rift, but though they lose contact with it, Riker turns on the station's shields to bounce it back out of the rift. Data then calculates where to throw a tractor beam to get Riker back. Wearing a spacesuit, Riker heads for the part of the station nearest the mouth of the rift and is luckily pulled out along with the piece of station, and beamed back before it explodes from the stress.

CONTINUITY: Okona is returned to the Erstwhile (The Outrageous Okona).

DIVERGENCES: So Geordi knows what a Kewpie doll is? Even I'm not sure!

PANEL OF THE DAY - Guest Keith Giffen panel (not really)
REVIEW: Though this whole story sure could have been told with two thirds the pages, part 2 manages some good suspense and action in its last act. Throughout, I felt like I could see this one tv, which is certainly commendable. It's his last appearance, but Okona is FINALLY palatable and in character. Better late than never, I guess.
